A closed terrarium is a self-sustaining mini ecosystem that needs only minimal care. Follow these simple steps to keep it healthy and beautiful:
1. Light
Place your terrarium in a spot where it receives bright, indirect light.* Avoid direct sunlight — it can overheat and damage the plants.
* Artificial light (like a desk lamp or LED light) is also suitable.2. Water
Closed terrariums rarely need extra water. When there is no longer condensation on the glass, it's time for a few sprays.*If you notice heavy condensation on the glass throughout the day, open the lid for a few hours to allow moisture to escape.
*Soil is another way to measure humidity. When the soil surface is dry (for example, when the moss appears dry), add a small amount of water (a few sprays).
The soil should be moist but not wet. The colour of soil will lighten as it dries.3. Airing
While they will usually thrive as closed terrariums, opening the lid occasionally helps keep your plants healthy.4. Cleaning
Wipe the inside and outside of the glass gently if it becomes foggy or dusty.
Remove any yellow, brown or dead leaves to prevent decay.5. Trimming
If plants grow too tall or touch the glass, trim them carefully with small scissors.
Replant or compost the cuttings.6. Mold or Algae
If mold appears, remove the affected parts and let the terrarium air out for a day.
Keep it slightly drier afterward.Tip: Once balanced, a closed terrarium can thrive for months or even years with almost no watering.
